02 · How long it takes

Honestly: it's slow.

A simple cash claim usually takes 30 to 60 days; estate and complex claims up to 180. The State is required by law to consider a claim within 180 days of a complete package. While you wait, no interest is paid.

The Controller's Office is currently warning of higher-than-usual claim volume, so it may take longer. "Act now or it disappears" is false. There is no deadline to file. Anyone rushing you is giving you a reason to doubt them.

What a first-timer goes through

  • Day 1

    You get a letter

From the State, or from me. Either way the first step is the same: search your name at claimit.ca.gov and check the Property ID matches. Here's how.

  • Same week

    You check the property's status

A CLAIM button means it can be claimed now. INFO only means the company is still transferring it to the State; that can take months. I don't sign agreements at that stage.

  • 1–2 weeks

    You decide

If it's simple, file yourself. If it's an estate, stock, insurance, a co-owner, or an old address to prove, call me. There is no deadline on deciding. Talk to family.

  • 2–4 weeks

    You gather documents

See required documents. Estate claims take longest here because of death certificates and proof of heirship. When I handle it, I prepare the documents and book the notary.

  • Filing day

    Signed originals go by mail

The State does not accept claims by email or fax. Signed originals are mailed to the Controller's Office in Sacramento.

  • 30–60 days

Simple cash claims resolve around here

The State sends the cheque to you directly. It does not pass through me.

  • Up to 180 days

Estate and complex claims resolve around here

The State may ask for more documents. If I'm handling it, I respond. The current backlog can stretch this.

  • After payment

    Then you pay the fee

Only after the State has paid you. Taking a fee earlier is illegal. If the State pays nothing, you owe nothing.

Three things to know

If you file yourself, the State pays you. Even if I've filed, a direct claim from you is paid to you unless the State has already acted on mine. I receive nothing.

The State issues no investigator number. The way to check me is to call the State at (800) 992-4647 and ask about your own property.

I don't promise outcomes. The State decides whether to approve a claim, in whole or in part. That's why my fee attaches only to what is actually paid.
